Joan Ryan Baraba, '66

For a girl whose fondest memory of IWA is cramming onto the bleachers and sitting "scrunched up" while cheering on the Red Knights, Joan Ryan Baraba is anything but "scrunched up" now. As IWA’s Hall of Fame award recipient in the field of business, Joan has had an impressive career in the field of banking and finance. Joan has more than 30 years of banking experience with regional and money-center banks, as well as in a service bureau environment. Joan’s focus on corporate payments and Treasury management services has led to an in-depth involvement across such diverse markets as financial institutions, the federal government, large corporate and middle markets. She started her 11-year St. Louis banking career at Centerre Bank, before moving to Atlanta to join Bank of America and then Deutsche Bank. Joan is currently the Director of Corporate Products and Services, for Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, BBVA Compass USA. Joan received her BA from Fontbonne University and attended the University of Missouri’s graduate school of business. She holds a lifetime CTP (certified treasury professional) and has been a speaker at numerous national and regional association conferences, universities, and other educational forums. She is active in many civic organizations, including Girl Scouts of America, St. Vincent’s Health System, Downtown Daycare Center, and the Coalition of 100 Black Women. While Joan is justifiably proud of her professional accomplishments, she says that her greatest achievements are her 40-year marriage to her husband Ed and her three wonderful daughters. She is a loyal spouse, proud mother, accomplished businesswoman, staunch friend, collaborative colleague, and a formidable role model for all the young "Joan’s" now in formative mode.
