Still sporting her signature red hair and fabulous smile, Sr. Helena is as vital and energetic today as she was when she was known as Mighty Myrt during her days at IWA. Much has happened in Sister’s life since then. Entering the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word following graduation, she was professed a sister while pursuing her education and personal leadership goals. She received her Ph.D. in English from St. Louis University and became a professor of English at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, TX. Several years later, she served as Assistant to the President under Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery (a 2008 Hall of Famer) and eventually became Executive Vice President of UIW. In 1996, she received her law degree from the University of Houston Law Center, in response to the Congregation’s need for an attorney. During her leadership tenure, the Congregation created the "Headwaters Coalition" which legally preserves 56 acres of remaining green space on the UIW campus in San Antonio for education, ecology, and spiritual development of generations to come. Six years ago, Sr. Helena was elected Congregational Coordinator, serving as head of the dynamic, international "family" of Sisters located throughout the U.S., Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Africa and promoting the Congregation’s mission. Lest you think her career is over, think again! Sister Helena has assumed a new role but one for which she is eminently prepared – Chancellor of UIW. Sister looks forward to continuing her lifetime of service in this public arena.
