National Honor Society
On Friday, September 23, 2011, 14
members of the Incarnate Word Academy National Honor Society took part in the
Light the Night walk around Forest Park for the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. The girls arrived at the lower Muny parking lot, enjoyed refreshments,
received light-up balloons, and walked two miles around Forest Park with
thousands of others showing support for LLS. Our team raised $675!
All in all, the night was a fun, successful outing!
Incarnate
Word Academy National Honor Society Membership Requirements
The following are
the criteria for National Honor Society membership. Please contact Leslie Teague, the National
Honor Society Moderator, or Cabrina Noonan while Mrs. Teague is on maternity
leave until Thanksgiving, with any questions you have about the selection
process, which will begin second semester for eligible sophomores and
juniors.
Each prospective member
of NHS must meet the criteria of the Four Pillars of the National Honor Society
(Academics, Service, Leadership, and Character) in order to be selected for
membership. Each pillar is of equal
value in the selection process. Students
will fill out an information form and write an essay that shares how they have
met the criteria presented below, and faculty input is also taken into
consideration. A committee of five
faculty members will determine who is selected for membership into National
Honor Society.
1. Academics:
In light of the new grading scale, which began in fall 2010, students from the
class of 2014 and onward will be required to have a 3.7 cumulative GPA or
higher after 3 semesters or more at IWA.
Students in the class of 2013 are required to maintain a 3.5 cumulative
GPA. Students who meet the GPA
requirement will automatically be invited via letter during second semester to
apply for consideration for membership to National Honor Society.
2. Service: Candidates must demonstrate that they have
done service outside of Incarnate Word Academy that goes above and
beyond the requirements set by Campus Ministry or by the requirements of other
organizations to which the student belongs.
Candidates must provide a copy of their current Campus Ministry service
cards and document their service hours on the information form for NHS.
Examples
of Service:
- Working at Habitat for Humanity
- Tutoring outside of IWA
- Volunteering at one’s parish
Not
examples of Service:
- Hours counted for the basic service
requirements set forth by Campus Ministry
- Hours required by an organization a student
is involved in, for example, if a club requires its members to complete
a certain number of hours, those hours cannot be counted toward service
on an NHS application.
- Volunteer work done at IWA, such as working
at the Auction.
3. Leadership:
The pillar of leadership must be demonstrated in a variety of ways, such as
through leadership positions, like being an officer, leader, or manager of a
sport, community activity, or student group, and through participation as a
general member of such organizations. A
student can also be a leader inside or outside of the classroom by
participating in class, by acting as a good example for others, and by helping
around Incarnate Word Academy at various events. Students may not repeat examples from the service
pillar. Students will be required to
document their leadership positions and leadership experiences on the NHS
information form and will also be required to write an essay about their
leadership experiences.
Examples
of Leadership:
- Officer/ Manager of a student club or team
- Being an active member of a student club or
team
- Being a good example to others around campus
by participating in class and by helping others.
- Being a leader in a youth group
- Helping around IWA with various activities
and events
- Being a positive influence at work.
4. Character:
The National Honor Society states that "The student of good character upholds
principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards
of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others,
and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.” This includes acting as an exemplary citizen
of IWA both within and outside of IWA, including on social media. Students will be asked to rate themselves in
each of the areas of character listed above, and faculty and staff will also be
asked for their input.
