Mission Statement
The social studies department aims to have students acquire content, a firm grasp of reasoning and practice in inquiry and research, effective methods for expressing and defending their ideas, and civic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of a citizenry in a participatory democracy. Social Studies prepare young women to identify, understand, and work to solve problems facing our diverse nation in an increasingly interdependent world.

Elizabeth Kelemen Heidmann is a 1995 graduate of Incarnate Word Academy. She earned both her BA in History and her Masters in Education at Truman State University. The 2008-2009 school year will be the ninth year she has taught at Incarnate. For the last six years, she has taught two of the college credit history classes. Bill Huber graduated from CBC in 2003, SEMO in 2007. Bill has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a specification in Social Studies. Bill is also the Head Coach for Cross Country. Jennifer Huber '97 jhuber@iwacademy.org Ext 143
Jennifer Huber found her calling as teacher early in life, working at Sylvan Learning Center as her first job. By the second semester of her sophomore year of college, Mrs. Huber was certified as a substitute teacher in the state of Missouri and worked in the Kirksville R-1 school district during college. She graduated from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in American History. Furthering her education at Truman, she earned her Master of Arts in Education degree in History/Social Sciences. She has been a certified Social Studies teacher in grades 5-12 for four years.
Mrs. Huber came to Incarnate Word Academy from a small proprietary college in St. Louis where she was both an instructor and Department Chair of General Education. After three years in proprietary education, she decided to return to her Alma mater (class of 1997) as a teacher…her dream job. Juliann Neumann jneumann@iwacademy.org Ext 129
Mrs. Juliann Neumann graduated from Missouri State University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Comprehensive Social Studies degree and began her teaching career in 1982 at the Lake of the Ozarks. She completed her Master of Arts degree in International Relations at Webster University in 1996 and underwent training to teach Advanced Placement European History at Truman University in 1997. She has been an adjunct instructor for St. Louis University’s 1-8-1-8 college credit program in both World History and Political Science. Mrs. Neumann is also certified through UMSL’s dual credit program to teach Political Science for college credit.
Mrs. Neumann was nominated for “Who’s Who in Education” from 1997 through 2001. Through her many years of teaching at several different schools in the area, she has served on a number of committees, as a mentor and as the head of her department. Being a native St. Louisan and graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Mrs. Neumann was excited to join the Incarnate Word community in 2006. Deb Rothweiler drothweiler@iwacademy.org Ext 144
Deborah Rothweiler has been a member of the IWA community since March, 1980. She received her BA degree in History from Fontbonne College and her MAEd in Behavioral Studies from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. Although she does not have a degree in Economics, Ms. Rothweiler has included in her continuing education, coursework in economic education through the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Education and the Missouri Council on Economic Education. As a result, she was invited to participate in a teacher exchange program to Ukraine and to be a member of the Teacher Advisory Board for the Saint Louis Federal Reserve Bank. Her ideas and innovations in the classroom merited her the Robert Coe Fellowship to participate in a summer workshop 1979 at Stanford University on teaching American History.
Ms. Rothweiler has been involved in coaching spirit teams (cheerleading and dance) for 32 years. She received the NFHS Cheerleading Coach of the Year award in 1999. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Ms. Rothweiler is actively involved in spirit teams development through her association with the state cheerleading coaches association (MCCA) for whom she has served on its Board and presently is its webmaster and newsletter director. She also serves on the state's dance team coaches' association (MDTA) as its coordinator of safety judges and webmaster. In addition, Ms. Rothweiler has been active in this field through her association with the Missouri State High School Activities Association. She is presently a Spirit Rules Interpreter and a member of the MSHSAA Cheer Advisory Board and served on it Show Me Leadership Committee.
