Mission Statement

The Incarnate Word Academy Science Department offers a wide variety of courses designed to equip students with the necessary skills to succeed in a technologically advanced world and in future scientific endeavors.



Michael Cowan

Michael Cowan has been teaching at Incarnate Word Academy since he graduated from Washington University in 2003 with a B.A. in Physics.  He is working on his Masters degree at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Mr. Cowan moderates the Model United Nations Club and, with Ms. Heidmann, coaches the Speech Team.  He is also the Head of the Science Department.
 
Originally from Houston, TX, Mr. Cowan has visited 13 other countries, including living in Singapore for 2 years.




John Gundy

LCDR Gundy retired from the US Navy in 1994.  He earned a Masters Degree in Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and began his teaching career in North Carolina.  He moved to St. Louis in 1997 and has taught at Epiphany of Our Lord School, St. Genevieve DuBois School and at the Junior Naval Academy, a magnet school within the St. Louis Public School System.  Mr. Gundy holds a BA degree in Natural Science from Illinois Wesleyan University, a Masters Degree from the Naval War College in National Strategy and Strategic Affairs and a Masters Degree from Salve Regina College of Newport, Rhode Island in Business Management.  His Missouri teaching certificate allows him to teach Mathematics and Chemistry.  He is also an IWA Golf Team coach.

Tanja Mead is returning to IWA after teaching here from 1995-2003. She received her BA in Biology from Washington University and has been teaching in Catholic high schools for twelve years. She is teaching Biology and Chemistry classes this year.
