Senior Peer Leaders are a group of selected seniors who mentor and
guide freshmen and assist with sophomores at their retreat. The
selection of this group of senior students begins in April of their
junior year. They apply for a position as a senior peer leader. After
a personal interview and written application, the seniors are chosen to
participate in a two day training sponsored by the National Council on
Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. This training encompasses group dynamics,
teen issues, confidentiality and other character building activities.
The payment of the services for NCADA training comes from our Drug Free
School Money allocated through the Normandy School District.
The senior peers are integral to the orientation of freshmen. The
peers spend one and one/half days with the new freshmen before school
begins. They help the new students to know each other, find their way
around IWA and have fun!
The peer program pairs the senior peer with a small group of
freshmen who meet during the year to "stay in touch" about being a
freshmen and to learn about being a high school student. The senior
peers meet with their small group once each cycle.
The senior peers are also involved in the sophomore retreat, along
with the REAP Team. The peer leaders put together the freshmen retreat
in April. This is their final activity with the freshmen class. After
spending the entire year with the new class of freshmen, the senior
peers move on as graduates and IWA's newest alums.
